A Word to the Wise: Protect Your Eyes!

A Word to the Wise: Protect Your Eyes!

With Christmas shopping in full swing, you may find yourself strolling by the cosmetic counter at your local department store.  And although that makeover with new lipstick and the perfect shade of bronzer or eyeliner may sound appealing, it would be less so if you knew your new look was to be accompanied by an eye infection or skin infection a day later!  Take a moment to consider the dangers of sharing brushes, applicators, and cosmetic products with other shoppers, or even with friends and family.  Viruses (such as the virus that causes cold sores), fungi, and several types of bacteria that are frequently found on the skin, can be transferred when cosmetics are shared.  Check out the list below of just a few bacteria that were found lurking on cosmetics when tested in a study in 2015, and see your eye doctor immediately if you develop eye redness or irritation after making the mistake of sharing cosmetics!

P.S.  Also be cautious of the cosmetics used by the make-up artist who does your make-up at the next wedding you attend; Ask that disposable applicators be used with non-contaminated cosmetics.
